Color blocking effect

Giving a dark contrasting block in the center and surrounding it with a neutral shaded border gives the focus of the person on the central block and the person loses perception of the neutral surrounding border.

Hence the overall subject appears bigger in this case. This is especially useful for making tiny rooms look comfortable by giving contrasting colors in few parts of wall and the floor.
